As a Public Health Sanitarian or Sanitarian Trainee, you would conduct environmental health inspections to confirm compliance with Public Health Law and the State Sanitary Codes. You would be responsible for documentation, citiing deficiences to facility operators, reviewing facility plans for appropriateness and viability and conduding follow up vists to determine ongoing compliance Areas of assignment may include but are not limited to, restaurants, children's camps, hotels/motels and temporary residences, pools/beaches, mass gatherings and include the inspection of community, non-community and non-transient no-community water systems. You may also assist in health-related investigations and responses to chemical exposures or emergencies.

Salary Range:
From $42986 to $58028 Annually
Minimum Qualification
Permanent Transfer Candidates:
Current DOH employee with permanent or contingent-permanent competitive status as a Public Health Sanitarian, G-14 OR current NYS employee with one year of permanent or contingent-permanent competitive service in a qualified title G-11 or higher and eligible for transfer under Section 70.4 of the Civil Service Law. Public Candidates for Provisional Opportunity (Open Competitive Minimum Qualifications):
For Sanitarian Trainee, NS:
Either A. a bachelors degree, including 30 credits in the natural and applied sciences; of which at least 18 credits are in the natural sciences (defined below); Or B. an associates degree in the natural sciences AND 4 years experience in environmental health protection (defined below). (Sanitarian Trainees participate in a one-year training program to receive instruction and gain experience in performing beginning-level professional work under close supervison. Upon successful completion of the one-year traineeship, trainees are advanced to Public Health Sanitarian without further examination). For Public Health Sanitarian, G-14:
Either A. a bachelors degree in the natural sciences (defined below); Or B. a bachelors degree, including 30 credits in the natural and applied sciences, of which at least 18 credits are in the natural sciences, AND one year of experience in environmental health protection (defined below); Or C. an associates degree in the natural sciences AND 5 years experience in environmental health protection (defined below). ?Experience in Environmental Health Protection is defined as conducting inspections to determine compliance with federal, state, or local environmental laws, regulations, and established public health standards, OR experience in the notification of public health environmental hazards and the development of methods to eliminate or control such hazards and/or the spread of disease and other environmental factors impacting the health of individuals and/or the public, such as in hospitals and long term care facilities. Qualifications:
Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
